Where to Find the Best Outdoor Adventures Before Spring Arrives

February in Albuquerque occupies a sweet spot that most people overlook: winter sports are still happening at Sandia Peak, hiking trails are open and empty, and the weather is actually ideal for being outside without the summer heat. If you’ve been treating February as a month to hide indoors, you’re missing some of the best outdoor experiences the city has to offer.

Sandia Peak Ski Area: Last Call for Winter Sports

Sandia Ski Area typically operates through mid-March depending on snow conditions, which means February is your last real chance to ski or snowboard without driving hours to northern New Mexico. The runs aren’t Colorado-level, but that’s kind of the point—it’s accessible, affordable, and you can be on the slopes 30 minutes after leaving your house in Albuquerque.

If downhill skiing isn’t your thing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails at Capulin Snow Play Area offer a quieter way to experience winter in the Sandias. The trails wind through pine forests with occasional views of the valley below, and on weekdays, you might have the place entirely to yourself.

Hiking Without the Crowds (or the Heat)

February hiking in Albuquerque hits differently. Trails that become unbearable in summer are perfect right now—cool mornings, mild afternoons, and barely anyone on the paths. The Embudito Trail offers a solid workout with views that improve the higher you climb. Start early, and you’ll catch sunrise lighting up the city and the West Mesa beyond.

La Luz Trail remains a classic for a reason, but in February, you can actually attempt it without starting at 5 AM to beat the heat. The 8-mile round trip to the tramway terminal is challenging but doable, and if you time it right, you can ride the tram down instead of hiking back—your knees will thank you.

For something easier, the Three Gun Spring Trail in the foothills delivers views without the commitment. It’s a 2-mile loop that’s perfect for a lunch break hike or an after-work walk before sunset. The trail is well-maintained, accessible, and family-friendly if you’re bringing kids or dogs.

Bosque Trails: Winter Beauty Without the Bugs

The Rio Grande Bosque transforms in winter. The cottonwoods lose their leaves, opening up views of the river and the mountains beyond. The trails are quiet, the mosquitoes are gone, and the wildlife is easier to spot—migratory birds pass through, coyotes become more visible, and if you’re lucky, you might catch bald eagles hunting along the river.

The Paseo del Bosque Trail runs 16 miles along the river, but you don’t need to hike all of it to appreciate the space. Access points at Alameda Open Space or the Tingley Beach area let you explore shorter sections, and the flat, wide path is perfect for walking, running, or biking.

Mountain Biking: Trails Dry Out Faster Than You’d Think

Albuquerque’s desert climate means trails dry quickly after storms, making late winter excellent for mountain biking. The foothills trail system offers everything from easy cruising to technical challenges, all with views that remind you why people move here.

Tres Pistolas is a local favorite—flowy, fun, and accessible from multiple trailheads. If you’re looking for something more technical, the 365 trail network provides options that range from beginner-friendly to legitimately challenging. Just check trail conditions before heading out—respect closures, and don’t ride muddy trails.

Sunset Spots Worth the Drive

February sunsets in Albuquerque are spectacular, and certain spots showcase them better than others. Petroglyph National Monument offers multiple short hikes with expansive views of the city and the volcanoes silhouetted against the sky. It’s especially beautiful just before dusk when the light turns everything golden.

For something different, drive up to the Sandia Crest via the scenic byway. The east side climb takes about 45 minutes, but watching the sunset from 10,678 feet—with views stretching from Colorado to Mexico on clear days—is worth every minute of the drive.

Why February Matters

In a few weeks, spring will arrive, temperatures will climb, and outdoor spaces will fill with people who’ve been cooped up all winter. Right now, in February, you get Albuquerque’s outdoor scene at its most accessible and least crowded. The trails are empty, the weather is perfect, and the experiences are just as good as they’ll be in peak season—maybe better, because you’ll have them mostly to yourself.

Don’t waste this window. February in Albuquerque isn’t a month to endure—it’s a month to get outside and remember why living here is worth it.
