There has been a lot of talk about smart homes, which may require a hub. Automating your Albuquerque home can make your life easier. A smart home hub allows you to connect devices from different manufacturers and then have them interact using the automation platform.
Automation hubs give you the ability to control everything connected to your home from one app.
Hubs don’t always need to be used for automation, though. Many smart home devices can be controlled using an app. Some come with a hub or bridge.
The advantage of a multipurpose hub is that you can control everything with a centralized app, so some people may see this as a preference.
Do You Need a Hub?
It’s important to think about the types of devices that make up your smart home system and how many devices you need to control when deciding if you need a hub.
Depending on the device, a hub may not even be required or may come with one. The Philips Hue Smart Lights, for example, have a hub that connects to your router and acts as a bridge between your smartphone and the devices.
The Nest thermostat is also compatible without a hub, as are Sonos speakers and Ring doorbells.
LG and Samsung TVs increasingly serve as hubs, and Apple TV can be a hub if you have devices that support HomeKit.
The more smart products you add, the more likely you are to need a hub.
Using a hub, you can control multiple devices at once and create “scenes.” For example, if you are going to watch a movie, you might program your hub to dim the lights, close the blinds, lock the doors, and adjust the heating in your living room.
Which Hubs Are Available?
As a result of the popularity of smart devices and the Internet of Things, many hub options are now available.
Alexa users will enjoy the Amazon Echo 4 th Generation.
Amazon Echo 4th generation can connect to a number of low-power devices. There are a lot of triggers that you can use to activate other devices with Alexa’s advanced routines. You can pair it with Alexa Guard, which alerts you in case of an emergency by listening for smoke alarms or glass breaking and turning on your home’s lights.
SmartThings Hub v3 from Samsung is another excellent choice. The device supports Zigbee and Z-Wave, and it can be connected to hundreds of devices. SmartThings can also be used to create a number of different scenes and scenarios, and recently started working with Nest products.
The Apple HomeKit platform supports fewer devices than Google’s, but you can create more complex routines and scenes with it.
It is a smart speaker and a hub for HomeKit, so you can connect your lights, locks, and other devices to it.
The Amazon EchoDot is one of the cheaper hubs, and it’s compatible with WiFi and Bluetooth devices, but it doesn’t work with Z-Wave or Zigbee.
As a final option, the Google Nest Hub Max is a good choice.
The large 10-inch screen is one of its strongest points. You can make video calls using Google Duo on its camera and dual speakers.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread are all built into the Nest Hub Max. If your home security cameras are compatible with Google Assistant, you can use the display to view live footage. Also available are video doorbells and baby monitors, and the on-screen controls allow you to adjust the light.
When comparing all the available options, you need to think about your goals and what you plan to control. You may not need a hub if you have just one or two smart devices. If you have several, a hub can be worth the money.
