When most people sell a home in Albuquerque, they’re usually thinking about things like finding an agent, pricing their home, and the usual home selling matters. Yet there’s an important matter that home sellers need to look at – safety.
Crime is a reality, and thieves look for opportunities to steal. That’s what they do. It’s a fact that thieves can take advantage of a home seller to get into the home and steal valuables.
What can you do to protect yourself and your possessions from theft when selling your home in Albuquerque?
Discuss Showing Procedures With Your Realtor®
One advantage of working with a Realtor, like Sandi Pressley, is that they have experience in what to do to keep your home safe during a sale. There will be procedures during the sale to make sure your home is safe.
Some of the procedures to talk about with your Realtor are:
- Will a lock box be placed on your home?
- If a lock box is placed on your home, which type?
- Will people and/or other agents know there is a lock box on the home?
- Who is responsible for securing the home?
- Who will watch prospective buyers as they view the home?
- How will the showings be tracked?
Showing and home access procedures should be discussed and understood well before showings start.
Don’t Let Anyone in Without an Appointment
Never, and we mean, NEVER, let a stranger into your home without a properly scheduled showing appointment. They might say that they just want to take a peak at your home. They may seem friendly. No matter what they tell you, do not let them in.
You can politely advise them to call your agent to schedule a showing. Not only does this protect you and your home, but also will weed out anyone not serious about buying your home. This protects your time as well.
Lock Away Valuables
If you have any valuables laying around or in drawers, they are not safe. Lock them up. Lock away anything that can be resold by a thief. If you can’t lock them away in your house, find another secure location to store them.
Remove Prescription Drugs
Prescription drugs are also a hot item for theft. If you take a controlled medication, it’s especially important that it is out of sight and locked away.
Put Away Bills, Calendars, Invitations, & Other Mail Pieces
Identity crime is a huge problem now. Your identity can be stolen from anything with even limited information. True, they already know where you live, but that’s all they should know. Bills, invitations, even calendars can be used to steal your identity. And just think of the damage that could cause while trying to sell and buy a home.
