Make Your Lawn Stand Out to Albuquerque Home Buyers

Do you have a grass lawn that’s looking a bit dull? If you plan to sell your home in Albuquerque, nothing is more off-putting to buyers than a dismal lawn. You want the green grass to pop out and pull in potential buyers, especially in our current market. So now is the perfect time to focus on your lawn care. Even if you don’t plan to sell your home, it’s a great way to get outside and get some fresh air and exercise.

Rake

Who knows what’s accumulated on your lawn during the winter. Rake those dead leaves and twigs so that air and sun can reach down to the grass roots. Use a light rake so that you don’t damage shallow grasses or remove the layer of soil holding seeds that need the sun to germinate.

Weed

Spring has arrived, and so have the weeds. To deal with this nuisance, you can use the old fashioned method of pulling them up by hand or a hoe. Make sure you get the whole plant, including the roots. Once you get the weeds out, make sure you mow your yard regularly to stop seed production.

If you use a pre-emergent weed killer before the weeds wake up, make sure it’s a calm day. Wind can spread the chemicals onto plants you don’t want to kill and into waterways you don’t want to pollute.

Aerate

If you own a lawn aerator, or know where you can get one, now is the time to put it to use. Aerating your lawn encourages healthy lawn growth by letting air, water and nutrients reach the roots. If you have a newer lawn that’s less than 3 year sold, you should aerate twice a year. Then you can go to one a year. And you don’t need to rake the plugs. You can mow over them and they will go dissipate naturally.

Overseed

If you have seed from last year, or you can obtain more while keeping socially distant, cover your existing lawn with seed. Cover bare and thinning patches of turf using a mix of seed that includes slow-growing and low-growing grasses. This will ensure your lawn will stay young, healthy, and thick.

Water

Make sure to water early in the morning. This will prevent the water from evaporating too quickly and going to waste. It will also help prevent insect and disease issues. Watering deeply and less frequently makes the roots stronger and deeper. Just don’t over water, as it can make your roots soggy, keeping them from breathing, as well as rotting and attracting insects and disease.

You can check to see if your lawn needs watering by taking an 8″ screwdriver and pushing it into your lawn. If it goes in easily, it doesn’t need watering.

Fertilize

If you can obtain fertilizer, make sure to use it on your lawn. It helps keep your lawn healthy so it can resist disease and weeds. Fertilizing also plays a role in lawn color and helps the grass recover from stress. Grass often needs more nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium than the soil provides. That’s where fertilizing comes in.

Mow

When the grass is growing well, it’s time to mow. The proper mowing height will depend on your type of grass, but for good lawn health, follow the “one-third” rule: Never cut off more than one-third of the length of the grass.

The yard is the first thing people notice about your home, and the cornerstone for curb appeal. Make sure the grass is thick and healthy with these essential spring lawn care tips.
