Finding the Perfect Home in Albuquerque for You and Your Dog

Over the past few years, data shows that millenials are looking for homes that will be a great place not only for them, but their dogs as well. Since about 44% of all households in America are reported to have a dog in the family, this comes as no surprise.

Are you planning to buy a home in Albuquerque and want to have a welcoming environment for your dog(s)? Here are a few things to look for.

A workable floorplan

Do you have an older dog? Getting up and down the stairs might not be so easy. Perhaps a ranch-style home is a better bet at this stage of your life.

A safe yard

When you’re looking at homes for sale in Albuquerque, you need to pay close attention to the outdoor space. Is there enough room for Fido to run? Is the yard fenced? Is the fence in decent shape?

Other furry friends

When this pandemic is under control and social distancing is no longer a thing, then you and your dog will be meeting up more with your neighbors. Make sure that the neighborhood you choose is dog friendly.

Barking dogs

The neighbors may be nice, but their dogs may not be so well behaved. Having loud dogs around is bad enough, let alone when they get your dogs going.

A park nearby

If you’re having a hard time finding a home with a large lot for your dog, you can look for a home near a dog park. Here’s a list of the best dog parks in Albuquerque.

Beware the Albuquerque coyotes

Are you looking at areas in Albuquerque where there are coyotes or other predators? The city of Albuquerque notes that “coyotes are an important part of the natural ecosystem in the Albuquerque area, and do not distinguish between wild prey and unsupervised pets.” The city of Albuquerque website has some important guidelines to keep you and your pets safe if you do find yourself in a neighborhood with coyotes around. But it’s best to avoid those areas in when looking for a home if you can.

You not only have to think about the danger factor, but also what life will be like if you can’t put in as doggie door and have to leave your dog alone while you’re gone for large stretches of time.

Is it a busy street?

Your dog will get our sooner or later no matter what you do. If you live on a busy street, you already know the risks of them being hit by a car.

Nooks and crannies

If you do buy a two-story home, that unused space under the stairs would make a great dog hangout area!

Community rules

Like it or not, some HOAs have certain dog restrictions, even with particular breeds. There may also be size restrictions. Make sure that if you’re looking at a community that has an HOA that you make sure your dog is allowed.

The right flooring

Dogs are rough on floors (notice we didn’t say “ruff”), so you should try to find a home with dog friendly floors. One of today’s most popular options is luxury vinyl tile, which gives you the look of wood but with a much easier-to-care-for, pet-friendly material.
