There are so many great reasons to buy a home in Albuquerque, and one of those are the many great parks in the area. The Albuquerque Parks and Recreation department is a highly regarded program offering residents endless opportunities for sports, leisure and unique pastime activities. Parks

Collectively, there are almost 300 parks within Albuquerque. From playgrounds to dog parks and everything in between, the parks in town are not only meticulously well-kept but also full of diverse amenities. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Balloon Fiesta Park – The flagship park in all of Albuquerque. Not only does Balloon Fiesta Park host the annual Balloon Fiesta but it also has a multitude of tennis courts, football fields and soccer fields. With paths throughout it has become an ideal location for runners and bicycle races. Looking to practice your golf swing? Look no further! And as an added bonus for families, they have movie screenings throughout the year.
  • Roosevelt Park – The go-to park for disc golf in town. There is also an impressive playground for the keeps to let out some energy. Remember to bring your dog with you! Roosevelt is home to a wonderful, open, dog park.
  • Elena Gallegos Park – Well maintained trails assist in observing the beauty in this nature preserve park. Enjoy multiple picnic areas (both covered and uncovered), horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking.
  • Jerry Cline Park – Equipped with a playground, tennis courts, and multiple sports fields. What makes this park stand out above the crowd is the trail looping around the outside. In total, it’s .7 miles, making it ideal for a quick workout.
  • Tiguex Park – Located in the heart of Oldtown, Tigeux Park stands as the city’s Tricentennial Park and boasts a wonderful playground, athletic fields and an ideal amount of shade trees for picnicking. As an added bonus, there’s also a trail for biking and running around the perimeter of the park.
  • Robinson Park – Home of the most popular famers’ market in the city, spend your Saturday morning amongst hundreds of vendors from the ABQ area. Make sure to go hungry!
  • Dog Parks – Regardless of where you live in the city, you’ll find a dog park nearby! Albuquerque is home to 15 dog parks, some of which are fence while others are not.

Golf

Open 364 days out of the year, there are ample opportunities to get out on the golf course without having to belong to a club.

  • Los Altos – Opening in 1960, Los Altos serves as Albuquerque’s oldest course. It offers even the most causal golfer a fast-paced game. However, don’t let the flat terrain and fast play fool you, the course also has wonderful scenery including 2 large lakes and mature shade trees.
  • Arroyo Del Oso – a 27-hole course aimed towards advanced and intermediate players, respectively. It was rated as one of the best 50 municipal courses in the nation back in the 80’s.
  • Puerto del Sol – This course has grown to become ideal for both beginners and aged golfers due to its accessibility for walking. Puerto Del Sol is made up of 9-holes with relatively straight fairways.
  • Ladera – Easily one of the most beautiful locations in all of Albuquerque. Ladera is nestled between both the Sandia Mountains and the western volcanos. It is also probably the most challenging and the longest course in the city.

All golf courses offer rentals and classes for people of all ages.

Other Recreational Activities

  • There are 5 indoor and 7 (plus 2 splash pads) outdoor pools in the city. All pools offer swimming lessons, making swimming an ideal year-round activity.
  • If you get the chance, take advantage of the cities portable rock climbing wall! It is the perfect stepping stone for any aspiring climbing enthusiast.
  • If you’re looking to spend your Saturday morning on the tennis court or signing your kids up for various organized sports throughout the year, the Parks and Rec department offers many classes, leagues and open play opportunities.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day at the park or a new hobby to keep the family occupied throughout the year, the city’s parks and recreation department has your family covered!
